  • Researcher with expertise in marine management, natural resources and social science knowledge in the high north.

    Solveig Øye Bjørdal is a researcher at Nordland Research Institute with professional roots in interdisciplinary resource management, environmental governance and social development in the North. She has particular expertise in fisheries and marine resource utilization, nature management and protection, and the interaction between ecological and social systems. 

    Competence

    Solveig is engaged in community-oriented research at the intersection of environmental planning, natural resource management and political governance. She works on issues related to, among others, fisheries, coastal zone planning, open space management, climate adaptation and preparedness in reindeer herding, coastal culture and food systems. Within all these themes, the focus on local and experience-based knowledge and flexible co-management is a common thread, and the work is often carried out in close collaboration with local populations, administration and other social actors.

    Through project work on Nordland Research Institute Solveig has gained extensive experience in practical fieldwork and data collection, qualitative analysis, and both academic and popular science communication. Solveig combines solid professional knowledge with a strong commitment to inclusive processes and knowledge-based management in social-ecological systems in the North. 

    Education and work experience

    Solveig holds a Master's degree in Coastal and Marine Management from the University Centre of the Westfjords (2023) where her Master's thesis analyses Norwegian-Russian fisheries cooperation in the Barents Sea. She holds a Bachelor's degree in High North Studies from Nord University (2021).  

    She started with Nordland Research Institute as a researcher in 2023. 

    Projects and publications

    Solveig has worked on several major research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway and the EU, including FACE-IT , WELFED and OutGen , in addition to projects commissioned by the public sector, such as Evaluation of office relocation in reindeer husbandry management commissioned by the State Administrator of Nordland. 

    Solveig participates in several ongoing projects, and will take part in the CoastSupport and SocialShip projects that will start in 2025.

    Lectures and dissemination

    Solveig has presented research results at academic conferences such as the Arctic Congress and the Reindeer Herding Conference and has organized several workshops, especially with a focus on local participation and co-management. Research dissemination combines research-based insights with practical facilitation for dialogue between management, industry and local communities.
