Publishes the activity book "Women who make waves"

The EmpowerUs project is behind the activity book "Women Making Waves", a tribute to strong and innovative women along the coast of Europe.

The activity book is made by ERINN Innovation, Nordland Research Institute and the EmpowerUs partnership. It serves as a learning resource for children, highlighting real-life stories of women who have contributed to marine science, conservation, coastal livelihoods, the arts, and community activism. It is suitable for use in both the classroom and at home.

The book is freely available online and will be distributed in printed form at upcoming events organized by EmpowerUs.

– “Women Making Waves” is more than just stories, it is a tool for empowerment and inspiration, says Maiken Bjørkan, project manager for EmpowerUs and researcher at Nordland Research Institute .

– It brings young readers closer to the ocean and highlights the many different ways women make a difference in their communities and for the ocean itself.

From historical legends like Grace O'Malley, Ireland's pirate queen, to modern artists, lighthouse keepers, surfers, and filmmakers, the book introduces readers to inspiring role models, while inviting them to reflect on their connection to the sea through games, drawing activities, and creative writing assignments.

– EmpowerUs aims to reach all types of audiences, and with this book we hope to encourage children to become curious about the coast, as well as showcase shared connections with our common ocean around Europe and empower the next generation of ocean stewards, says Cecile Bratt, project coordinator from Nordland Research Institute .

Let's inspire the next generation of ocean champions - one wave at a time.
