SocialShip - surveys

Detailed information about privacy related to data collected through surveys in connection with the SocialShip research project.

The surveys are about the social working environment on Norwegian fishing vessels, cargo and passenger ships. Two questions are central: (1) How do fishermen and seafarers experience the social working environment on board their vessel? (2) What are the factors that influence the social working environment on board?

The surveys are part of the research project SocialShip . The purpose of the project is to contribute to increased knowledge about how to create a better working environment at sea.

The project is led by Birgit Pauksztat, senior researcher at Nordland Research Institute Partners in the project are Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, the Institute of Marine Research and the Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca (Italy). The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway (project number 352603).

How we store and use your information

  • All data collected as part of the project is treated confidentially.

  • Nordland Research Institute and Western Norway University of Applied Sciences have joint processing responsibility for the personal data in the project.

  • Only the project team has access to the personal data. The project team is led by Birgit Pauksztat, senior researcher at Nordland Research Institute Partners in the project are Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, the Institute of Marine Research and Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca (Italy).

  • The data material will be anonymized as soon as possible; names of individuals and participating vessels and organizations will be replaced with a code that is stored in a separate name list ("code key") separate from other data. The code key will be deleted at the end of the project.

  • The analyses combine the survey responses with information about the shipping company and the vessel. The results are presented through presentations, reports, educational materials and scientific publications, among other things.

  • In reports, publications and presentations, data is used in such a way that it is not possible to link the information to individuals.

What gives us the right to process personal data about you?

We process your information for research purposes in the public interest. On behalf of Nordland Research Institute The privacy services at Sikt – the Knowledge Sector's service provider, have assessed that the processing of personal data in this project is in accordance with privacy regulations.

What happens to your personal data when the research project ends? 

  • The project is scheduled to end on September 30, 2028.‍

  • The information will be anonymized at the end of the project, and the anonymized data will be archived at Nordland Research Institute for further future research and teaching purposes.

Your rights

‍As long as you can be identified in the data, you have the right to request access to the data we process about you, to request that the data be corrected or deleted, and to object to the processing. If you contact us to exercise your rights, you will hear from us within one month at the latest. We will provide an explanation if we cannot identify you or if your rights cannot be exercised. You also have the right to complain to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority about how we process your data.

  • The Nordland Research Institute ( Nordland Research Institute AS) and the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences are jointly responsible for the processing of personal data as part of the project.

  • Only members of the project team can see your personal data. The project team is led by Birgit Pauksztat, Research Professor at the Nordland Research Institute (Norway). Project partners are the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (Norway), UiT – The Arctic University of Norway (Norway), the Institute of Marine Research (Norway) and the University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy).

  • The data will be anonymized as soon as possible; the names of participating individuals, vessels and companies will be replaced by codes. The code key will be saved separately from the other data and will be deleted at the end of the project.

    For the analyses, the information from the surveys will be combined with information about the company and the ship. The results will be presented for instance in presentations, reports, educational material and scientific publications.

  • In reports, publications and presentations of project findings, the information will be presented in such a way that it is not possible to trace the information back to specific individuals.

What gives us the right to process your personal data?

‍We process information about you for purposes related to scientific research, and because the research project is considered to be in the public interest. On behalf of the Nordland Research Institute, the Data Protection Services at SIKT (the Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research) have assessed that the processing of personal data in this project is in accordance with the privacy regulations.

What happens to your personal data when the project ends?

  • ‍The project is expected to end on 30 September 2028.‍

  • At the end of the project, the data will be anonymised and archived for future use for research and education.

Your rights

‍As long as you can be identified in the collected data, you have the right to request to see the data that we are processing about you, request that the data is corrected or deleted, or protest against the processing of your data. You will hear from us within a month. We will provide an explanation if we cannot identify your data (eg, if the data have already been anonymised) or if your rights cannot be exercised. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Authority regarding how we are processing your data.
